Series Statement: Geometric Landscapes
The inspiration for this series came from three separate and distinct elements. The first of these, is direct observation of the hills and mountains which are found in the southeast region of the United States. Specifically, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. The second inspiration came from the Cubist movement in art history, which was first seen in France during the early years of the twentieth century, which was seen my many critics as very radical. Elements of the cubist movement were characterized by the use of assorted planes and angles to represent the subject. Finally, the third inspiration draws from the Fauvist movement in art which lasted from 1904 through 1908 and was associated with the use of a bold color palette used by Henri Matisse. The paintings of this period and group of artists were considered to be outside of the traditions of fine art and bold for their time. The series I refer to as "Geometric Landscapes" draws from each of these elements.
