Artist Statement: Based outside of Philadelphia, Kristen Bell has been working on honing her craft of painting since 1988, when she took her first painting class while studying filmmaking at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has been working mostly in oil, painting landscapes, still lifes, and figures in various environments, both on canvas, and as murals, ever since. Along with the Art Institute of Chicago, she studied at The University of the North Carolina School of the Arts, The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Penland School of Craft, and Guilford College. Her work is in many private collections, and has been exhibited in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, and North Carolina. To make her paintings, Kristen applies many layers of translucent oil glaze to create a visual language of pattern and depth that is both evocative of a place, and tells a story of emotions and more ephemeral experiences. She paints about what's important to her; the natural world, our relationship to it, and to ourselves.
